Anja Salonen is a visual artist whose practice explores the psycho-emotional complexities and philosophical implications of ecological relationships, trauma, and new materialisms through the lens of female subjectivity.
Salonen’s colourful figurative works depict fantastical and imagined worlds of electric vibrancy - settings that exist on a spiritual plane outside of time and space.
Her world-building process resembles collage, drawing from mythological, symbolic, art historical, digital, and observational references to explore our relationship to the self, the natural world and the universe at large.
Salonen received a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been the subject of several shows in the US and internationally, and has been included in the Pacific Coast #127 edition of New American Paintings, featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, Elephant Magazine, and the New York Times, amongst others.
